Receptive Knowledge of Nouns and Collocations and the Impact on English Skill Performances

Interests in examining the roles of receptive vocabulary knowledge and collocational competence on EFL learners’ proficiency have grown considerably; yet, extent how noun, verb-noun collocations, noun-preposition collocations impact their English skill performances is still insufficiently researched. To address such gaps, this study specifically explored Thai nouns its performances. Three types tests were created by using high-frequency taken from Academic Vocabulary List (AVL), which became basis selecting lexical grammatical collocations. The validated a pilot study, then distributed to 2 nd year students ( N = 135; 28 males; 107 females) at Walailak University, Thailand. results analyzed descriptive statistics, independent t-test, ANOVA, multiple linear regressions. It was revealed that learners, who participated had insufficient either form or meaning, encountered complexities identifying Receptive significantly predicted performance reading tasks. findings indicate urgent need include into teaching as learners seem unable acquire them own; besides, meaning may imply deeper problem structure. Therefore, it important emphasize learning materials, e.g., textbooks modules, well course design instruction university level Thailand explicitly integrated lessons (form meaning) facilitate development areas.
